Expert Advice: Drugstore Makeup Faves
We absolutely love when we find drugstore makeup and facial products that rival expensive brands! Today, some of our favorite makeup artists around the Southeast share their go-to tips and tricks when using cost effective products.
KERRI’S DRUGSTORE PICK
Kerri Bunn, of Birmingham, Alabama, is an esthetician, hair stylist, and makeup artist. Her studio, BOMA, is very popular among our brides. Kerri’s favorite drugstore product is NYX professional “golden bronze” eyeliner. She says it lives up to it’s “slide on, glide on and definitely a turn on” tagline!
“I love NYX golden bronze eyeliner because it’s waterproof and if you live in the Deep South with never-ending summers, you know what that can mean to a girl! Also, it’s a fun way to get color around the eyes without overdoing it with eyeshadow on a daily basis. It can save you time to get out the door and do life! In my book this eyeliner is a daily go-to that I get asked about all the time.” -Kerri
Brittany Benton Massey hails from Hoover, Alabama, but travels all over the South to make her clients look gorgeous. She specializes in hair and make up for brides and editorial shoots, and has worked with Mariée Ami on both! Being a busy mom of 3, Brittany loves a good beauty hack that saves her money. She shares her top 2 with us.
“My favorite face wash is a bar of soap - Vanicream! It beats out any fancy, expensive skin care regimen I have tried to date!” -Brtittany
“Makeup wise, L’oreal Voluminous mascara is the bomb. Legitimately, I’ve compared it to so many high-end priced mascaras, and it has trumped them all in my opinion! It doesn’t run, stays on all day, and is just the right amount of thickness!” -Brittany
Cheryl Quinn, of Charleston, South Carolina, has been a makeup artist for 20 years. She began her career working for Chanel, Trish McEvoy, and Bobbi Brown at luxury retailers such as Barney's flagship store in New York City. While Cheryl’s resume includes notable celebrities, her favorite customer is a bride! She has 3 favorite budget products that she regularly uses and recommends to her clients.
“As a professional makeup artist, I can’t risk a mascara that transfers onto the upper eye or underneath. Many mascaras out there are labeled waterproof, from drugstore to luxury brands, and they still speckle and smudge. If I want to use a performance mascara (one that lengthens a or thickens) on someone, I will use that first, follow with a clean mascara wand, then seal the deal with Great Lash.” -Cheryl
"You MUST wear sunscreen daily! My favorite is the Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch SPF100. Who wants a greasy product on their face in the middle of summer when you are dealing with high heat and humidity? No one! Ultra Dry Touch is great for a weightless sunscreen without clogging the pores. If you have drier skin, I recommend using your regular day moisturizer underneath.” -Cheryl
“There is nothing better than cleansing oils! Cleansing oils are good for all skin types to remove face and eye makeup with ease. Just slather a few pumps (without water) all over the face, including your eyes. Give your lashes a little massage with your fingers to work it in, add water to your face to emulsify, and rinse! Cleansing oils let the makeup slide off and out of the pores.” -Cheryl
