Mariée Ami: Katherine & Jamie
Tell us a little about your story as a couple.
Jamie and I have actually known each other since we were really little! We were guppies together at Mountain Brook Club and went to school together from elementary school through high school but never quite ran in the same circles (i.e. he was a wild man and I was a straight-laced nerd). Jamie went to Auburn and then moved back home and settled in Birmingham while I went to Georgetown and then moved to New York. We didn't reconnect until our 10 year high school reunion in the summer of 2015 - Jamie found out that night that I was planning to move back to Birmingham in the fall and he informed me that he was going to take me on a date and we were going to be "the king and queen of Mountain Brook". We went on our first date five months later and we've been together ever since!
What was your vision for your wedding? Favorite detail?
I'm not a very "bridey" kind of girl and I definitely hadn't been planning my wedding since childhood but I knew without question that I wanted our ceremony to be at St. Mary's on-the-Highlands (the church I grew up in) and our reception to be at Mountain Brook Club. I also knew that I wanted to keep the color palette pretty minimal (we stuck almost exclusively with black, white/ivory and lots of greenery) and keep the design pretty streamlined. St. Mary's and MBC are such inherently beautiful spaces and I didn't want to take away from that by doing too much! My biggies were gorgeous, organic-feeling floral arrangements, a great band and really good food! I'm not sure I could pick one favorite detail...every minute of our wedding day was so perfect and so me!
What was your favorite part of the planning?
I truly loved every bit of it! Neillie and Chelsea felt like old friends from the get-go and they made the process so easy and fun. I kept waiting for the stressful part to hit us and it really never did. My favorite parts were working on invitations with Caroline and florals with Mary Cox...they both took my simple vision and turned it into something so beautiful!
What was your most memorable part of the day? The most surprising part?
The rain was definitely a bit of a curveball - it poured down rain from about the time we left for the church through the entire reception. Luckily our entire wedding took place indoors and it definitely didn't stop us from having an amazing time! The sweetest and most memorable moment for me was turning the corner in the church with my dad and seeing Jamie just bawling crying on the altar. The most surprising part was how unbelievable our band turned out to be! I had read reviews and watched their videos online but had no idea what a show they were going to put on...they made the night!
If you could give another bride in the planning process any piece of advice, what would it be?
Have fun and don't sweat the small stuff (that's what your planner is for)! Every member of the Mariee Ami team is an absolute pro and they are not going to steer you wrong so don't let the details make you crazy. And hug your planner every chance you get!
