Mariée Ami: Sarah & Spencer
Tell us a little about your story as a couple.
Spencer and I met 5 years ago in Washington, DC on a party bus to a Phish concert that was organized by mutual friends. Actually, we were both born in DC in the same year before moving south (AL & SC) with our families. We both decided to head back to DC after college. Our parents also met each other / started dating / got engaged in DC and I love the commonalities between our story and theirs! We danced to "Tide Turns" by Phish for our first dance.
What was your vision for your wedding? Favorite detail?
We got married at The River Course on Kiawah Island. I love the architecture and interior design of the club house and I especially love the beautiful landscape of the South Carolina Lowcountry - so I really wanted to highlight what I already had to work with. Our wedding suite (a collaboration between Mariee Ami Paper and one of my best friend's mother's, Champagne Maker, featured watercolor paintings of Kiawah landscape and wildlife, our cake had sweetgrass basket detailing and we had a fabulous gospel group for our ceremony - I think all these details and others brought together my vision of highlighting the nature around us -- but dressing it up a little! I loved so many things about our wedding! But I was surprised at how excited I was by Spencer's groom's cake. I sketched out a Vail, CO peak (Spencer and I both grew up going to Vail so it is a very special place to both of us) and had Ashley Bakery bring it to life. The groom's cake even featured a little replica of our puppy who we named after a ski run on the mountain!
What was your favorite part of the planning?
I love Pinterest and had been saving wedding inspiration ideas for a couple of years - it was so fun to share those ideas with Mariee Ami and my awesome vendors and then to see everything come to life. There wasn't anything that I copied exactly from my inspiration board - but pointing out bits of one wedding and bits of another party and having a team that got what I was trying to do was a lot of fun.
What was your most memorable part of the day? The most surprising part?
It's hard to pick a most memorable part of the weekend - everything was so special and it meant so much to us to have all of our loved ones with us. I loved the toasts our sweet friends and family gave on Friday night, our first look and getting to visit with our wedding party before the ceremony for photos, and dancing on stage with our band, my girls, Spencer and his little brother!
The most surprising part of our wedding day for me (and probably everyone else too!) was how totally relaxed and calm I was! I had always imagined that I would be a little anxious on my wedding day (I think every bride wakes up to wedding related nightmares during their engagement!) but I have honestly never felt more at peace. I know this has to do with how secure I feel with Spencer and how ready I was to marry him, but I also know that it definitely had a lot to do with Mariee Ami being at my side. Neillie and Julia had everything so organized and taken care of, and their manner really set the tone for a the whole weekend. Before I could even ask for a lipstick touch-up, Julia was handing it to me. Mariee Ami planned our rehearsal dinner at The Beach Club on Friday night of our wedding weekend - and it was beautiful and so thoughtfully done!
If you could give another bride in the planning process any piece of advice, what would it be?
Enjoy your engagement season - and planning! I can't believe we're already married. It's easy to get wrapped up in all the planning and logistics. Spencer and I took a few dance lessons before our wedding and I loved it. Even if you and your fiancé don't need them - take them! It was such a nice time for us to spend together, just dancing and holding each other and thinking about how special our wedding was going to be - and it was! We couldn't have done it without Mariee Ami!
