Mariée Ami: Francie & Smylie
Tell us a little about your story as a couple.
Smylie and I both grew up in Vestavia and during my sophomore year of high school (his junior year), we had a few classes together, chemistry being one of them. We began dating that year and always laugh that I couldn’t even drive yet! After graduation, Smylie headed to LSU to attend college and play on the golf team and I headed to Auburn the following year. After 5 years of dating long distance (after college I spent a semester Dallas doing an internship), we both returned to Birmingham and Smylie began following his dream of playing on the PGA Tour! I began traveling to watch him play in tournaments all over the country. After nine years of dating my best friend (never breaking up once!), he pulled off the best surprise ever and proposed on the 14th tee box of the beautiful Shoal Creek Golf Course!
What was your vision for your wedding? Favorite detail?
I wanted a classic, elegant Southern wedding that was adorned in my most favorite flowers, with a delicious, Southern feast and one big party on the dance floor!
Neillie suggested a flower statement piece behind the Bride’s cake and it became one of my favorite details. It served as a beautiful background for our cake-cutting pictures and later for guests to pose for their own photos. Beth Jordan and Susan Huff of the King’s Garden made all of my flower dreams come true.
What was your favorite part of the planning? I loved having Neillie and Julia as a sounding board on just about EVERYTHING! They have seen it all and have great opinions and advice. I’m so happy we entrusted our special day to them! They made the process seamless and SO MUCH FUN! Their organization, creative ideas, professionalism, fun-loving personalities and attention to details made our special day everything we had dreamed of!
What was your most memorable part of the day? The most surprising part?
For me, the most memorable part of the day was walking into our reception at The Club, as husband and wife, hand-in-hand with Smylie and seeing the room for the first time! After months of planning and seeing all of my ideas and dreams become a reality, I was overwhelmed with joy! Seeing all the people we love there to support Smylie and me in that gorgeous, fun-filled setting is something I will never, ever forget!
The weather was not ideal on our day and I had been worried about it for a few days before, but on wedding day we hardly noticed it and I honestly mean that! With our ceremony and reception being indoors and thanks to the intricate maneuvering and positive attitude of the Mariee Ami team, we were able to fully enjoy ourselves as we made wonderful memories, rain or shine! And with the help of our photographer, Heather Durham, we were even able to somehow get first look photos on the golf course-something that was so important to both of us! Also, we had a fabulous getaway planned that included us leaving on a golf cart decorated with a floral wreath, driving down a path lined with ignited firework fountains (Gerbs). The weather forecast included severe storms and a lot of rain. When it came time for our departure, there was a break in the storms and amazingly, Neillie and her team were able to make our getaway dream a reality! It was amazing and one of our favorites memories of our wedding!
If you could give another bride in the planning process any piece of advice, what would it be?
Early on I decided I was going to try my best not to let myself get hung up on every small detail in case certain things didn’t work out, or in case certain vendors weren’t available, trying not to micro-manage myself into a frenzy! I wanted to be open to all the suggestions of the Mariee Ami team, knowing that they were going to provide me with all the necessary resources to make our wedding weekend everything we had hoped for-and they did!!
Some of the best advice I received is that wedding day goes by super fast, so do your best to take a deep breath and take in everything that’s happening around you. This tip helped me enjoy the day so much, because it really does come and go so quickly so soak it all in and enjoy this special moment!
